Configuration

stele works without any configuration. Here’s what you can change if you need to.

Turn off the reminder before a write

This is the step where stele stops a write once to show a rule the agent hasn’t seen. To turn it off:

stele init --remind=off

The agent still loads your rules when a session starts, and writes are still checked afterwards.

Turn off the check after a write

stele init --check=off

Then only stele check finds broken rules.

To turn either one back on, use --remind=on or --check=on.

These settings are saved in .claude/settings.json. Commit that file and your team gets the same setup. Upgrading stele won’t change them.

Choose what happens if stele itself fails

Say the hook runs into a problem of its own, like not being able to read its signing key. By default, the write goes through and you get a warning.

To block the write instead, create a stele.json next to stele.md:

{ "block_on_error": true }

If stele is missing or crashes, this setting can’t help, because stele never gets to act. Writes go through. That’s one reason to run it in CI too.

Remove stele

stele uninstall

This removes the hooks, .claude/rules/stele-rules.md and .stele/. Your stele.md, stele.lock and stele.json stay where they are.
